Reading the first book in this series you think 'this is fairly engaging and well written', but the admiration for the depth and complexity grows as you continue through the series until you are in awe.

This isn't a problem though as there is always a progressive unveiling of new cultures , mythology and mysteries to keep you entertained and interested. There is a lot of war and fighting, which may put some people off a bit, If that sort of thing would put you off, I'd say do read but just skim over those bits where possible.

Steven Erikson's Malazan Book Of The Fallen has dozens and dozens of memorable characters and plots that twist and turn across continents dimensions and time.
