This provides preparation in academic English, cultural orientation, and academic study skills. Our program also provides a clear path to receive an undergraduate degree from a program of your choice. Along with strengthening your language skills, you will receive credit for the ESL courses you take.

We will prepare you to succeed linguistically, academically, culturally, and spiritually in your first year of undergraduate study, which will hopefully lead to success for years to come.

The two sponsoring departments provide an interdisciplinary curriculum to enhance both theoretical and applied competencies in the learning and teaching of English and foreign languages as expressions of their respective cultures. The Graduate Certificate in TESOL Education provides graduates with practical, theoretical, and critical knowledge of the English language and of methods for teaching it in various social and academic settings.

Shortly thereafter, an unprecedented surge of English Language Learners ELLs in the public schools was mirrored by a corresponding surge of graduate students in ESL teacher education. Untrained in the teaching of linguistically diverse students, teachers at all grade levels were eager to learn how to incorporate ESL best practices into their content classes for more effectively supporting ELLs' linguistic and academic development.

Other UAB students and alumni, those who specialize in adult learners, teach ESL in a variety of post-secondary programs ranging from rural community outreach to post-doctoral academic writing. Our alumni have taught in 32 states and 42 countries. UAB's ESL education program openly embraces global engagement initiatives and, by doing so, furthers the university mission of preparing local and international students for the globally connected world.

Global engagement is a two-way process; international students come to UAB to pursue the ESL master's degree, and local students and alumni go abroad to teach English. The goal of TESL is to help students adjust to the unique rules and challenges of learning English from the perspective of many different first languages.
